American Craftsman mortise door lock and retaining clip replacement

Home Owner from Sterling, VA
Hello--I recently was trying to replace the lock on my sliding glass patio door and the mechanism including the retaining clip fell into the door--careless mistake. The door handle is OK--it measures 4" from screw to screw. I need a new mortise lock and retaining clip--the lock opening (img_0240) measures approx. 3-5/8" from center of screw holes. The rounded lock opening is approx. 4" high and 0.5" wide. I tried a couple of locks purchased from home depot but they did not fit. Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

Hello! Based on the given information, my recommendation is the 82-218. Look it over and see what you think.

During installation of the 82-218, you may find that it's a tight fit and may even believe that it's too big to fit. This is a common experience. It's important to note that the 82-218 is made to be a little big so that it properly snaps in place. As a result, you have to put it into the hole at a slight angle. It doesn't go straight in.

Thanks for the info Tom. Does the lock come with the retaining clip? I will take a look at the Item you mentioned. Thanks.

I'm sorry for missing that part of your original inquiry. It sounds like you might be referring to the keeper.

The 82-218 does not come with one, unfortunately. The reason being that it's compatible with about a million different kinds. The most common pairings are our 89-020, 89-021, and 89-021D. It's not possible to confirm which one is best for your door without measuring the original, but at this stage the dimensions you should be concerned with are installation hole spacing and depth, most especially depth. That won't be easy to gauge without the original.

Ok. The keeper then fits inside the hole and the lock screws into that correct?

No, the keeper installs on the door frame. It's what the mortise lock hooks onto when you flip the lever.

The only thing that goes inside the hole is the mortise. There are some mortise locks that have face plates that help them screw to the door, but I don't believe yours is one of them.

Ok?I still have the keeper so don't need that. So it's just the lock needed. This helps a lot?thanks again!
