Anderson Sash Balance

Handy Person from Northbrook, IL

I need to replace the sash balances for my Anderson double-hung sash windows. The sash sizes are approx. 35.5"W X 25.5"H. The windows are original to the house and were probably manufactured in the late 1970's. The etched logo markings are 4 A W 78/l, with X7 (Xi?) at the bottom tip of the triangle logo. Do I need to remove the side and top tracks to identify the sash balance part numbers or can you tell me the correct replacement part numbers?

Thank you.

Hey Tom. The most reliable way to identify replacement balances for Andersen windows is to remove the old balance boxes and send us pictures of the stamps upon their surface. A specific cluster of numbers should identify the right replacement. See the video below that details how to remove and replace Andersen balances. You want to take care not to damage the window jamb while doing this; if you're uncertain, hiring a handyperson to do the job is never a bad idea. Also see this blog article here that goes into more detail on this item. Let me know if you have further questions.
