The door latch is loose and hard to lock.

Hello there. It certainly sounds like you may need to replace the mortise lock. See if our Andersen 82-037 matches up; compare with the dimensions below. If the old thumb lever seems damaged, replace it with the 82-043. Let me know if you have further questions.
