Hi, my window wouldn't stay up and I found your very useful videos and was able to determine that the right-side channel balance spring had detached from the clip, and to get it back on track, which fixed the problem. However, it feels like I have to be very gentle when opening or closing the window or it might pop off again. (In fact, it just did, when I went back to check for markings.)
While I had the glass panel and the balance spring off, I noticed that the metal frames of both balance springs are bowed, as if from the tension of the spring. The bowed shape keeps the channel spring from laying flat against the window channel; it tilts away from the window frame at the bottom.
These are the originals, installed in 2007, and I'm wondering if they're actually too long for this window. It took a great deal of pressure to push them down far enough to catch beneath the takeout clip when putting them back into place - far more difficult than shown in the video on your website.
Dimensions:
The metal part of the channel balances is 20.75 inches long.
The actual channel height of the window is 46.25 inches (43.25 inches if you subtract the 3-inch pop-out "stopper" at the top of the window frame).
Markings:
The numbers "20" and "3" stamped near bottom
The letters "BSI" and "RN" stamped near bottom
Would you recommend that I order new ones, and specifically, do you think I should replace them with a different size than what's currently in there, given the seemingly excessive tension it takes to "cock" the spring in the takeout clip? Or is that just because they're old?
