House was 4 yrs old when we bought thus 1988 built. The Sill is wood but might have thin plastic cap full width however I can not remove screws that hold the handle mechinizum under sill, 4 -6 screws. Thinking about removing ~ 1/4 inch thick piece of sill above mechinizum so as to access srew heads, better idea?

Thanks for reaching out to us. Take a look at the 39-348 and 36-078 shoe stud (sold separately). These parts look like matches for your old hardware but review the specifications to confirm a good fit.
Your old handle should have a set screw that needs to be removed to take off the handle. See the video below.
As for the sill, it's odd that there's a plastic cap. Would it be possible for us to see a photo of it? We've attached a video below that will show you how to remove the wood sill in the meantime.
