Thanks for reaching out! Your are correct. When the worm gear detaches from the operator base, it does have to be repaired using a machine typically used in warehouses. Therefore, you would need to replace the operator, as you've suggested.

I believe we can supply you with the replacement you need. However, I will need to see the arms of the operator removed from the bottom of the swinging sash. 

Once we have an idea of how they connect to the window, I'll be able to identify the most accurate replacement for your operator.
