Balance came loose need assistance

A handy person from CARROLLTON TEXAS says:
One of the balance spiral came loose, fell down and window will not stay up. I removed both balances. It's easy to pull both spirals down, little tension and that does not change after few or many turns.

Balance is 30 inches long and 3/8 diameter and appears to have a black cap. The window sash is 30.5 inches tall by 35 inches wide and double pane. Windows are aluminum builder grade.

Are these balances broken? How are suppose to respond when you pull the spiral down? What do I need to do to fix?

Thank you
Paul

Hi there, Paul. Great name by the way. Looking at your balance, I believe you need our S400-30 spiral balance. The nylon bearing is not available in a black color tip option. Your tip may have blackened over time with the grease sitting in there from the balance itself. You will need to weigh your sash on a scale and refer to the sash weight chart on the store page to determine which color tip would work best. You may also want to consider purchasing the charging tool for this balance, our 75-005. It'll help when installing the bow tie at the end of the spiral to the sash clip.

A quick learner from CARROLLTON TEXAS says:
Thank you for the response. Well I can't take the sash out I guess I could put a scale under it, slide it down and get close.

Tom from SWISCO responded:

I've done the same myself when dealing with the same kind of window. You put the sash on the sill, disconnect the balances, then gently lower the sash onto it. It may not be 100% accurate, but it'll be close, and should be fine for your purposes.
