Balance springs assistance

A quick learner from Eastham MA says:
I need to replace the spiral balance springs in some old windows. They are 25" long. Picture 1 attaches to the frame and picture 3 attaches to the window. If you don't carry the exact spring, can I use a more "modern" one as long as I replace both?

Unfortunately, your wood sash balance is no longer made. You will need our S500-25 red tip spiral balance with the 17-012 balance brackets. These brackets hook on the balance spiral.

To install these balances, you would drop them from the top on the side of the sash. Use the 33-017 screw to attach the balance tubes at the top. Now raise the sash and have someone hold it up while you attach the bottom bracket,17-012 with the 33-090 screw, while the U-shape opening corrals the spiral. With your finger bring up the spiral to the bracket and attach the 75-005 charging tool and turn the spiral clockwise three turns and hook it to the fork of the bracket. Repeat the other side and try the sash. If sash creeps down, raise and hold up the sash and give the balances another turn or two.

Please make sure to get back to us and let us know how everything works out.

A quick learner from Eastham MA says:
Can i do this with the sash removed or does it have to be in place?

I submitted a question about balance springs and you kindly replied with full instructions - I was a dummy and didn't print it and now cannot find it. Can you locate it by my email? I can resubmit if needed!

Hello,

I'll attache Paul's recommendations below:

I think I ordered the wrong length balance. My original one is 25" from end-to-end. Should I have ordered based on the length of the actual 'tube', which would be 24". See photo.

You are correct, you should match the tube that is 24" for S500-24.

I've read the instructions and I have a few installation questions. My windows are single hung old windows.

1. How do I secure the top of the balance spring to the window frame? Do I need a bracket or do I just screw it to the frame through the hole?

2. I see lots of discussion questions address the weight of the window. I did not weigh mine...should I do anything differently?

Casey from SWISCO responded:

To installed a spiral balance to the frame, you screw it in at the top where the old balance went, yes. As for sash weight, you should absolutely get yours. That's probably the most important aspect of a balance. You want the spring to have the right calibration, otherwise it won't "balance" the weight of the sash.

A quick learner from Eastham MA says:
I installed the springs and, while they work perfectly!!, I want to be sure they're in correctly. I've attached some pictures; the spring is screwed in at the top and doesn't hang perfectly straight down, but it as a slight angle. Should I have blocked it at the top, or adjusted the attachment at the bottom, so that it does 'travel' perfectly parallel with the window frame?

You may want to try loosening the top installation screw on the balance and raising and lowering the sash a few times to see if it straightens itself out. If that doesn't help, then adjust the bottom bracket.
