Hello there. I'm afraid I don't really know what you mean by the length being tight. However, the proper way to measure balance length is to measure the length of the metal channel, but do not include the nylon fittings in this measurement. The video below tells you everything we need to know for replacing channel balances. I recommend you send us pictures of the nylon fittings, as well as the stamp on the metal channel, if you're uncertain at all about what balance Series you're working with. We'd be happy to assist.
