Balances for 29 pound windows

Quick Learner from Ojai
Hi Steve,
2 windows are wider, 29lb each, 1 is smaller and only weighs 21lb, all 3 are 24" high. We think someone did not know what they were doing or just not finding correct parts as there are shorter, 213/4" long.

Hi Carol. Are the metal channels of all these balances 24" long? Do not include the nylon fittings on either end in this measurement. If so, you need either the S380-24 or S385-24. The only difference between these two balances is the 'depth' of the bottom nylon shoe, so compare both with your old hardware to see what matches best. Now, the stamp code on the balances in your pictures reads as 23 3, which conforms to our stamp option of 2330. This is for a window sash in the weight range of 15 through 18 lbs. You say your window sashes weigh 21 lbs and 29 lbs, respectively. Did you ever have trouble keeping the windows open before these balances broke? If so it's possible these balances were too weakly calibrated for your windows. Double-check your window sash weights; be precise as possible. You can then match those precise weights with the weight ranges listed alongside each stamp option in the chart below. That will indicate what stamp option you need to choose for each set of balances.

Stamp Option Sash Weight Range

2310 5 to 9 lbs

2320 9 to 15 lbs

2330 15 to 18 lbs

2340 18 to 23 lbs

2350 23 to 27 lbs

2360 27 to 30 lbs

Thanks Bob, the balances were definitely incorrectly installed, inoperable. So all definitely 24" long, 1 is 21lb, the other 2 sashes weighed 29lb. Just the wings is the question. Because balances were incorrectly installed not sure which ones in photo are correct. Just guess and if incorrect try the other style?

Hey there! Bob isn't in today but I think I can help. If I'm reading your posts correctly, it sounds like there is a difference in balance length for the same sized windows. Is that accurate?

If so, there's an easy way to determine exactly what length you need. All you have to do is get the height of the visible glass, and then add one inch.

So, for example, if the visible glass is 24", then you want a 25" long balance. Does that make sense? Let me know if you need clarification.
