Better balance?

Question

My windows need a 23" Series 380 & 385 balance with top piece 19-005 and bottom 15-005 with 2230 stamped on balance. A window repair man came out and said that my balances should be replace with a spiral balance because they were better. Is this true and, if yes, which spiral balance would I use and directions to install?

Spiral balances seem to have a longer life span, on average, but that doesn't mean they'll work better for your window. If your windows were designed for block & tackle balances, then that is what I recommend you use as a replacement. It is not advised using a different type of balance, because the results could be unpredictable.
