Broken Window Balance
Hello there. I am sure we can help, but to be safe, can you show us photos of the 'guts' or underbelly of the metal channel? Some balances from the west coast have an unusual design we must account for. We'll do our best to narrow this down from there.

I installed our window balances and they work but it seems like it requires a lot of pressure to fully close the windows at the bottom of their movement. When the window is over hallway open it's easy to move around but it seems like the springs are maybe too strong for the window? I checked and the window itself weighs about 25 lbs. I just wanted to see if this was common or if the original balances were incorrect for this window type.

Sorry to hear of your trouble with the new balances. If the sash weighs exactly 25 pounds, that actually does suggest the stamp option of 2650 is too strong for the window, since 2650 denotes a balance that can support a sash in the weight range of 26 through 30 pounds. This is odd though, since your old balance's stamp of 26-5 is equivalent to our 2650 rating. Did you ever have this problem with closing the window or keeping them closed prior to the old balances totally breaking? Were both of the old balances from this window stamped 26-5? Finally, double-check that sash weight just to be safe. We'll do our best to get to the bottom of this.
Then whoever installed your windows originally used balances that were too strong for the sash weight. You need S385-27 channel balances stamped 2640--these are meant to support a sash in the weight range of 19 through 26 pounds. To return the incorrect balances, see our Return Policy here.
