Broken coil balances

Handy Person from New Jersey
Hi, I have Cardinal series 8501 windows in my home and the coil balances on one of the windows are broken. I attached images that will hopefully help determine what replacement coils are needed for my window. If you need any more details, please let me know. Thanks, Jeff

Hey Jeff. I believe this is a 15-087 Coil Balance Shoe and 15-086 Housing. This system uses our Series 180 Coil Balances. To know what spring weights to select, you'll need to remove the assembly and look for stamps on the coils themselves. if there are none or you're unsure, give me the exact weight of the window sash, and I can work it out for you.

Hi Bob, sorry for the very delayed response. I was not able to find the stamp on the coils themselves, but I removed the sash and the weight is 17lbs.

I hope that information helps. The sash is part of the upper or outer section of the window and I was wondering if this would be difficult to replace once we get the right parts.

Hello! Bob isn't here today, but I can help you out from here.

So, since your sash is 17 pounds and you have 4 springs per side, that makes me think our 4 pound Series 180 option is your best choice. That falls a little short of 17 pounds but only by a pound. I don't think you'll notice the difference, to be honest.

Alternatively, you could use one 5 pounds and one 4 pound spring on each side, which totals 18 pounds of support. Again, I don't think an extra pound off either way will do any harm. It's ultimately up to you!

As for how difficult it is to replace, I won't lie to you. Coil balances can be a headache. You'll have to squeeze these out of a small cutout in the jamb, then squeeze the new assembly in while it's all mostly put together. If you can afford to make the cutout a little longer, you may want to consider it just to make your life a little easier. I use a utility knife.

Thanks for your help, I would like to order the parts so I can fix the window. What is the best way to go about ordering the parts that Tom recommended that I would need for the job?

Thanks,
Jeff

Great! All orders can be placed directly from our site at your convenience. I've linked you to the store page for each named part in my responses above.

Hi, I ended up ordering the parts for this window, but not sure on the direction the coils should go in the plastic housing.  Thanks and appreciate any advice or direction on how to proceed.

If you haven't already, see our diagram below showing how these coil balance parts would be assembled.
