Broken sliding part in top half of double hung windows

Home Owner from Oakland, California, USA

Hi there

Recently heard a pop come from our window and it stopped sliding smoothly or closing completely.  I removed both windows to take a look and found this part cracked.

These are in a double hung vinyl American Craftsmean Portrait Series windows.  Numbers/Letters on left read:  5.Z3Z.Z06.  maybe?

Numbers/Letters on right read:  5.365.638

Hello! Looks like you need a new cover. We ought to be able to help, but I need the following pieces of information:

  • A clear photo of the pivot shoe
  • The thickness of the spring, written down

Please let me know if you can get me those details and we can work from there.

Ok, got more photos including the pivot shoe.  It looks like it's still in ok shape.  I didn't see previously that the spring coil had broken.  You can see the thickness in the pictures but it was difficult to remove and measure.  Hopefully you all can still ID it?

I'm afraid I can't determine the thickness of your springs based on a photo alone. We need a precise measurement written in your response.

The pivot shoe itself looks like it might be the 15-228, though it's very difficult to tell while it's installed. Assuming that it is a match, it's compatible with two spring sizes: the 3/8" Series 165 and the 1/2" Series 160. Each one uses a different style cover, so you need to know what spring you need before you can know what cover matches.

Removal is always necessary prior to identifying this kind of hardware, so that should be your next step. You need to remove the springs anyway to get the stamp printed on the band, which is essential. It's not something you can get around, unfortunately. The videos below may be of some assistance.

Understood.  I pulled out the spring and shoe and attached a picture here.  The spring reads 9.0 (or 0.6).  I didn't notice any numbers on the shoe, but it had a letter C underneath.  Hopefully we're getting closer?
Thanks again!

Thanks! That's definitely the 15-228. Therefore you have either the Series 165 or Series 160, which I described above. I don't see a measurement in your last response, so your next step is to measure your spring to determine which of these Series is the best fit.

Sounds good.  Am I'm measuring the width of the spring?

You're measuring the width of the band. You want to make sure that the part you select fits in the track.

The metal band/spring is just under 1/2 inch wide, 15/32 or 11cm.

Great, then our Series 160 would be my top recommendation, along with the 15-150S single support cover.

Thanks Tom!  Really appreciate your patience and guidance.  Just ordered the parts.  I will watch those videos you sent along for installation tips.
Cheers~
