I have approximately 60 Farley windows that are 20 years old. Double hung, and both sash tilt. They have spiral balances that have never worked smoothly. I wonder if the spiral balances can be replaced with a different balance, such as a channel balance.
Can spiral balances be replaced with a different type?

Hello,
Though it may be possible, we do not recommend trying to use a different type of balance if your windows came with spiral balances installed. If your 20-year-old windows are still using the original balances, then they are certainly due to be replaced. If you could show us one of your spiral balances uninstalled, as well as confirm the length and diameter of the housing tube, we'd be happy to research this for you. It would also be a good idea to weigh your window sash to help us confirm the strength needed to support the window. Thank you.

Thanks Casey... It will take me a while to get one pulled out. I'll have to get back to you on this...
