Can you help me ID Channel Balances?
I have a 13 year old white vinyl SH vertical sash, double glazed, window in which one of the side load channel balances has recently failed. The complete window unit itself is approximately 52" wide by 62" tall, and the movable sash weighs in at 45 lbs. The other working channel balance requires about 25 lbf to move the block & tackle, which appears to make sense for 2 of them to be supporting a weight of 45 lbs. The stamp markings on the channel balances are "27 12 RB BSI", and the window was manufactured by Silver Line Windows in Lithia Springs, GA in 2005. The steel channel sections are 28 inches long, by 0.58 inches wide, by 0.63 inches deep. Overall length of the balance including upper & lower guides is 29 inches.
Can you recommend a suitable replacement please? I will of course need to replace both balances. Thank you.
Richard
Thanks for contacting us. This looks like our S390-28 channel balance. The only thing I'm not 100% sure about is the stamp. Your stamp is from an old rating system no longer in use. According to our records, this was designed to support sashes weighing 36 through 39 pounds, which would match our modern 2770 option.
However, you mention your sash is 45 pounds, which exceeds this rating. That would have to be custom made with a special strength balance.
We generally recommend sticking with what you had originally, but I wanted to go over this with you first. Did you ever find your balances to be too weak in the past? If so, that might be why, and it'd be a good idea to go up in strength. If your balances have worked fine, however, then our standard 2770 option should be fine.
Let me know what you think!
Thank you for your prompt reply and recommendations. The window is a rather large (4 ft wide) double glazed unit and fortunately does not get opened often, however when the time comes to open it, it is always a struggle. Once open it normally stays where it is put, thanks to a good deal of friction. I think that the custom option might be the better way to go. So how would I go about that, and what would the cost likely be? I can confirm that the sash weight is 45 lbs.
Best regards,
Richard
Okay, great. So what I'll do now is email you an order link and price quote for 2 of these balances. The quantity has to be pre-set when we do this, so if you wanted to order more, let me know. I'd be happy to change it.
This link works as a kind of private store page that only you can access. You can use it to add these special balances to your cart as if they were any other product. You can then checkout as normal.
I'll shoot that over now, just as soon as I fill in the details. Let me know if you have any questions.
