Cape May Nature Center Patio Door Parts

Handy Person from Cape May
Good afternoon. We have what I think could be called "quad patio doors". From the label I know they are style 5700. A search took me to Plygem, but I have since found that style 5700 is used by several manufacturers. Our local supplier Universal Supply suggested you could help me.

I am a volunteer (retired engineer) at the Cape May Nature Center where I was asked to restore our only set of patio doors. The biggest problem is there is no full-height keeper side track piece or keeper so the latch has nothing to latch to. I believe the other parts (rollers, interior handles and associated exterior covers, and weatherstripping) are available from you.

Another situation is that the end panels are not secured to the frame...they could be slid (if someone is strong enough) from the end to the middle. Do you have a retrofit latch set for the two end pieces to prevent them from being opened from the outside?

Here are some photos.

Hello,

Your mortise lock resembles the 82-218. I can't be sure what keeper would work best without seeing the original but the 89-020, 89-021, and 89-021D are commonly used with this lock. Take a look and see which would fit best on your door frame. I also believe you can use the new style 82-030 handle set as long as the 3-15/16" hole spacing matches yours.

As for the rollers, there's a good chance that we can supply replacements but we would need to see the original roller uninstalled to compare to our inventory. We'll also need to see photos of any other parts you need to research your replacement options.

Unforutnately, we do not carry parts designed to prevent the outer door panels from moving but a local professional should be able to help with that part of your project. Thanks for posting and let us know if you need anything else.

I believe you have provided all the answers except for one, unless the answer about the keeper is that answer. The part I think I will need along with the keeper is the full-height piece in the connector piece into which the latch-side panel slides so the latch can then connect to the keeper. I will look more closely at your answer. Thank you.

The mortise lock would generally latch directly into the keeper on the opposite door. I'm not sure what additional part you're looking for based on your description. If you have some kind of multi-point setup, unfortunately, we do not carry a door length keeper to accommodate that kind of setup but it looks like your door only uses one 82-218 mortise lock based on your photos.

Casey, I'm sure one of the keepers will work, but right now the latch is on the right side, but there is nothing in the connector piece screwed into the left door where the keeper could connect. That is what I would call the missing full-height piece to which the keeper would be fastened. Rick

In most cases, the keeper is screwed directly to the frame. You'd just need to be careful not to hit the glass in the door when making installation holes.

Casey, I suppose it is possible that the door never had a keeper. What makes me believe there was (or should have been) a full-height piece because the full-length connector piece wraps over the right side of the left door, and it is screwed with six exposed screws into the door frame. Basically it is an unfinished surface. The right door with the latch slides into the full-height connector piece and serves as weather protection. Without the connector piece there would be no protection from weather where the two sliding panels butt up to each other.

Casey,
In one of your replies you mentioned a manufacturer's name that might have led with "Weather.....". I just looked in your posts, but I couldn't find it. What name is that>? Rick

I see. Unforutnately, the additional piece should have come with the door and is not something we'd be able to supply. If possible, I'd recommend reaching out to the door manufacturer directly to see if the trim piece you're looking for is available separately.

We don't know the manufacturer's name, only that it is a 5700 style door. I was going to contact the name you suggested in your comment. That is the name I thought you had stated. Even if they were not the manufacturer, possibly they could suggest another name. Rick

I didn't mention a manufacturer name but you may have been looking at another customer post on our website. I did mention having a professional come out to help with your stationary door panels. A local handyman may know which doors were popular in the area around the time the doors were installed.

Friend from Cape May
Casey, that is probably what happened. Thanks. Rick
