Channel Balance

Handy Person from Washington

I need to replace a channel balance but all I have is an ink identifying number of 32 4GK Caldwell. The metal part only is 33" long it's 1/2" wide and has a 1" plastic end. I assume it's a series 351 but I don't know which option I need if any.

Attached are photos. I also included a photo of a broken part that is screwed to my Apline window that appears to be a stop for the channel balance to catch on. I will need one of those as well.

Thank you for your help identifying these parts so I can order them.

Thanks for writing in. This actually looks like either an S380-33 or S385-33 to me. The only difference between these two Series is the 'depth' of the bottom nylon shoe. With the Series 380 the depth of this nylon shoe is 1", whereas with the Series 385 it is 1-3/32". Compare with your own and see what is best. You will need to pick a stamp option of 3240.

Normally it's a bit difficult to say what top sash guide you need without seeing a whole version, but in this case the fact it's an Alpine window offers us a clue. See our 18-171. Compare the dimensions with your old top sash guide and see if you think this is what you need.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for your help. After checking the dimensions of the top sash guide on my Alpine window they did matched those of your 18-171. I also checked the dimension of the nylon shoe on the bottom of my channel balance and it is 1". So, I placed an ordered for a 33" series 380 with option 3240 (witch I'm not actually sure what that option means) and a 18-171 as you suggested.

Thanks again,

William

Hello Randy,

Thanks for filling my order #1201944 for your S380-33 series channel balance so quickly. I received it with no problems. However, after measuring the nylon shoes at the bottom of the new and old balances using a digital caliper (which I should have done before ordering) I realize I should have ordered your S385 with the larger bottom shoe. The old shoe measured 1.1" and the new shoe measured 1". My question is can I use the new balance with the smaller shoe without expecting any major troubles?

Thanks,

William

Hey, William. That's a tough question. The balance may work fine as-is, but I wouldn't be surprised if your sash felt a little loose in the frame as you open and close it. When you get your balances in, try them out and see how it feels. If worst comes to worst, you can return them for a refund. See our return policy here.
