Channel balance for window sash

Handy Person from Elk Grove, CA
I'm not sure who the window manufacturer is. I took a photo of some information printed on the window. Maybe the window was made by Allia? The channel balance has 31 4 stamped at the bottom. I'm looking for replacement channel balances.

Thanks for posting! I am confident we can supply you with the replacement balances you need for your repairs. Although, to determine the correct replacement, I will need to see a photo of the balance completely removed from the window channel.

I'll need to see clear, unobstructed photos of the bottom shoe as well as the top guide on the balance; these are important for identifying the series you need.

The stamp can only indicate the weight range a balance should be able to support to hold the weight of the sash. Unfortunately, it cannot identify the exact balance you need.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thanks for the photos. I've forwarded a link with a quote for (2) of the requested balances; there is a minimum of (2) for custom assemblies. If your would like a larger quantity of balances please let me know and I'll be happy to adjust the quote for you.

I did want to make you aware, the replacement balances will have a slightly different clip attached to the shoe. We have received confirmation that this clip will work as a direct replacement to your existing clip.

Please let me know if you any questions.

Thanks for your help. I will need 6 balances.
Also, would the 32 inch series 385 work for me? They look similar )at least to me) and seem cheaper than custom balances.

I am not able to update the existing quote because it was accepted, so I've forwarded a new quote to you. You'll need to be sure to use that one make your purchase.

I'm sorry to say the Extended-Travel Channel Balance and our standard Series 385 Channel Balance are not interchangeable. If they were, that would make our job a whole lot easier!

There are quite a few notable differences between a "standard balance" and an Extended Travel Channel Balance, which is the one you have pictured here.

  • The length of the metal on this balance should be 31-5/8". A standard balance is made in whole number increments. The standard balances would not hold up very long in the window given the difference in the travel length.
  • The shoe on the balance is much different than the one installed on a standard balance. Extended Travel Balances have a shoe with a wheel installed directly into them. It also has a much different shape and it has a hook attached to the bottom of it.

It would not be advisable to use a balance that has that many differences from the one originally installed in the window; however, you will need to make that decision. Keep in mind, there is a potential risk for causing irreparable damage to the sash or the window frame.
