Coil Springs

A home owner from Ontario says:
I have a window that a coil spring broke. When I removed the parts there where 2 springs one stamped 8 the other 4 (assume 12 lbs). Can I get away with just installing 1 #10 spring?

Thanks

Mike

Bob from SWISCO responded:

Hey Mike. In general, you want the overall amount of weight these coil balances are supporting to be as close as possible to the exact weight of the window sash. It sounds like your windows had 12 lbs of support on either side of the sash, for an overall support of 24 lbs. With coil balances generally being within 1 lb of the sash weight works, so it's possible this window weighs 23 lbs or 25 lbs--but any less or more would lead to faulty functioning. You always want to be as close to that exact sash weight as possible; it's also paramount that you have the exact same weight support on either side of the sash (for instance, 12 lbs and 12 lbs). Hope this helps.
