Coil balances

Quick Learner
Hi Double hung vinyl window 18 x 20 inch lower sash. Metal coil end broke off on both sides. I do not have a weight stamp on metal coil. I also do not have a total weight on the sash itself. I would like to purchase 2 pivot shoes. And 2 new coils. I believe i need the 15-228 shoes but would like to be sure.

Hey there. Measure the thickness of the coil tape. It should be either 1/2", and thus the Series 160 Coil Balance springs, or 3/8", and therefore the Series 165. If there's no stamps on the coil tape, you'll absolutely need to obtain the exact weight of the window sash to determine the proper spring weights. The video below explains.

Update, so the sash weights 9 pounds and the coil is 1/2 inch wide. I noticed on your site there are different typs of ends for the coils I don't know how mine are unless you tell me its necessary to remove an operational window. The shoes are identical to the 15-228. Also can you advise on how the coil connects to the shoe.

If the shoes are identical to the 15-228, and if the spring is 1/2", then you need our Series 160. This shoe isn't made to work with any other type, except for the Series 165, but we disqualified that due to its size.

The Series 165 has a "T" shaped end. This slips into the top of the 15-228, then twists to hold it in place. It's very rudimentary.
