Constant force tandem spring coils

Quick Learner from Warrington, PA

I have a window in my bathroom with tandem spring coils. The spring is stamped with a 4 on one spring and a 5 on another spring within the same tandem set. Do I make it a 9 pound single spring or what?

Hey Avidon. Good question. Yes, if you have two coils on each side of the window sash, and each pair has a coil stamped 4 and the other stamped 5, then you can simply use a single 9 lb coil on each side for your replacements, assuming the particular type of coil balance system has such a spring weight available. Please send us photos of your original coil springs and the pivot shoe that they connect to if you are uncertain about what kind, or Series, of coil balance system you have. Many thanks.

I also took the window sash out and weighed it?it's between 22-23 pounds which technically means the springs that came with the window were underweight I think.

Thank you! These photos are a huge help. What you have here is the old version of our 15-180 pivot shoe, which is designed to be compatible with the Series 190 coil spring. Based on your two stamps, I'd recommend the 4 lb. S190-440 and the 5 lb. S190-540, respectively.

We also sell the 15-181 clip and 15-182 bushing, if you needed them, but to be honest the originals should be reusable as long as they aren't damaged.
