Do I need the optional cover for the crank mechanism?

I need a left hand crank mechanism, #39-146 My old cover is broken and looks like part #39-154. Do I need this cover or will the cover shown with the new mechanism fit properly under the old sash. Thanks, Allen

Assuming the 39-146 is identical to the old operator, it should fit, yes.
