Double hung window sash removal

Handy Person from New York NY

I have this double hung windows that tilt inward that I need to replace the spiral balance and shoes. For some unknown reason when the window is open about half way and tilted 90 degrees the window sash would not disengage when raised on either side. A close look shows that the pivot shoe does rotate to an opening to enable the pivot bar to be lifted and disengaged. The pivot bars are circular.

I have tried rotating +- from 90 degrees but still cannot remove the sash. Also the pivot shoe has a screw that holds the balance spring in the slot. Unlike any pivot shoe I have seen.

Your comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, thank you for posting,

The first step will be to remove the screw from the pivot shoe. Second, when you remove the sash, you have to twist as you tilt in. The goal is to have one pivot shoe be higher in the track than the one on the opposite side, so that the sash is kind of at an angle. That will free the pivot bar from the cam.

I have related a video on the page for you that shows the removal of the sash. Please let us know if you have any additional questions!
