Heavy Window

A handy person from Ormond Beach, FL says:
Just received my replacement Spiral Balances. Based on your front page selection process it indicated I needed a 30" Series 900. The Balance length, diameter and mounting were perfect, but the strength, even after 12 clockwise rotations was not enough to support the window.

After searching through your website, I found a section which showed different tip Balances for multiple duties. I'm assuming I need the black tip Balances for heavy window application.

The supported window is 40lbs and measures 51" horizontal and 32" vertical.

As you can imagine, your 900 series Balances blasted apart on my final adjustment and try.

Please let me know exactly what tip I need based on the window specifications above.

Thank You

For a window of that size, we recommend a Series 600 Black-Tip balance. When charging the balance, you should turn the spiral no more than five cycles.

Received your reply suggesting I order a Series 600 Black-Tip Balance for my heavy window. In the process of ordering, I realized the Series 600 is shown as a 9/16" - 5/8" diameter tube.

I do not have the required space in the channel. With the balance centered in the channel, which I assume it has to be, I may be able to barely make it in depth before the balance tube makes contact with the window frame. The width is where I will have problems.

On the top RH & LH sides of the window are the tilt locks. With the locks engaged, it limits my width space to less than 9/16" - 5/8". With the tube centered in the channel, the tube will hit the tilt lock tabs.

The original balance and the Series 900 balance both were 3/8" and fit perfectly.

Is there a heavy duty balance with a 3/8" tube. I am open for suggestions.

Thank You

Hi Bill,
You gave us the sash weight of 40 pounds. The strongest 30" Series 900 would be yellow tip. The S900-30 with Yellow Tip would carry a window sash weight range of 24 through 34 pounds.
Let me know the quantity needed if interested in custom ordering this and I will email you a custom ordering link.

This information is based on 2 balances per sash. Balances are designed assuming friction in the jamb weather-strip will carry a portion of the sash weight. Suggested sash weights are approximate.

Donna,

The S900-30 should work. I have no choice because of the limited space between the window and frame.

The standard 900 series almost made it until it blew up after 12 - 16 turns.

Please provide me the information I need for ordering two (2) S-900-30 balances.

Thank You
Bill F.
