Help - Cannot re-attach bottom rail of window to this spring

Handy Person from Portland, Oregon
Cannot figure out how to release tension on spring or keep it in low position, so that I can re-attach metal rail on bottom of window to pivot boot on spring. Also, I believe spring may be damaged, as pivot boot will not pivot. Cannot find a replacement spring and don't know what this kind of spring is called. Window does not have a brand or mode number. Any idea what this spring is called and where to find one? Also, any tips or tricks to re-attach spring to metal rail?
Thanks

You can't release the tension on this spring, it's constantly under pressure. Instead, the pivot shoe housing locks into place when you turn the cam. For example, your cam right now is unlocked. That's probably why you feel so much tension. You need to take a flat screwdriver and put it in the cam, then drag the pivot housing down to a lower position. Then, turn the cam with the screwdriver to lock it in place. You should then be able to put your sash back in the frame.

If you can't turn your pivot shoe, then you'll have to replace it. I recommend the 15-087. Your springs are probably in good condition still and don't need to be replaced.
