Help Identifying Window Parts

Quick Learner from Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Hi I have just begun restoring my windows in my 1940 hours. They are in a pretty rough shape and I will need to replace the spring, spirals,  track, etc. I just started on my bathroom window as it is currently be renovated.

From what I understand they have a non tilt spiral spring that is 5/8" in diameter. The tube is 17" or 18" depending on what you measure.

On the track it says this:

KUHLMAN U.S. PAT. 1,754,956 patented 1931

The weight of the top sash, with the glass in, is 7 lbs 14.6 ounces. I do believe I  have to replace the window glass with tempered glass to be up to code, so I don't know if that will change the weight.

Also--I don't have pics of the jamb because I have some guys tearing out the rest of the window right now, but I can get that for you if needed! If you need any more info, pictures, or need to talk to me please let me know! otherwise I will be ready to order parts for this window ASAP and parts for the rest of my windows soon after. :)

thanks a ton!

Thanks for your patience during this busy season. Your old spiral balance hasn't been made in a long, long time, but the good news is that we have a modern alternative that's been proven to work in these old wood windows. It's made of two products: our Series 500 spiral balance and our 17-012 bottom bracket (sold separately). These two connect to form a setup very much like your original.

Regarding length, you only want to measure the tube. Don't measure the whole thing, just the exterior tube. I also strongly recommend you weight until the glass is replaced before you buy anything. That will absolutely change the weight and you will need a stronger option. How strong remains to be seen, but you'll know once the new glass is in.
