whats the best way to cut the slot for these in a new piece of screen sash

We do have the 70-218 lancing kit that we recommend for cutting the slot for the knife latches. If you are only doing a few screens, though, try using a dremel type tool to cut the slot. Maybe even a utility knife, but be careful not to cut yourself.
