The 90-289 locking handle is for the newer gliding windows. The older handle only has the locking stud, while the newer 90-289 has the locking stud along with two holes to attach the upper and lower locking bar ends. I believe you will need to have the bars in the unlocked position. You can use a slot screw driver to line up the bars with the holes in the handle. With the two bars in place in the handle, use light, but firm, pressure to tap it in place with your hand to lock it in. If you are not sure which handle you have please send us some photos of yours for us to take a look at.

Thanks for your response. Do the handles need to be replaced by new handles or can the existing handles be snapped back in.

Assuming your old handles are undamaged you should be okay to reuse them.
