How do you get the old, broken latch out to install the new one

Hello,
These types of casement locks should install with two screws through the back of the window frame, which you would access from outside the window or by removing the sash.
If you're still having trouble could you elaborate on what is preventing you from removing the lock? Thank you.

I appreciate the video, that helps, however the handle is still attached and moves up and down, it has not broken off. Can I break it off by pulling it out?

If the handle is stuck in the locked position, then yes, you'll need to carefully break off the handle to access the inner portion and disengage the lock. There is no specific way to remove the handle since it is not designed to be detached.
