I need to repair Simonton Windows.

Handy Person from philadelphia,pa.

I need to repair Simonton Windows. I believe the manufacture date is 1/18/11. I am experienced with windows of all sorts. I plan to follow your plan of replacing the shoes, coils, coil supports and pivot bars for both sashes. I have the list of needed parts but need to determine the weight requirements for the coils. Can the weights of the sashes be determined from the total size of the window? This window unit is 28-1/4" x 58". You call for S159 coils. What weight rating will I need. I don't want to weigh the sashes.

Thank you, David

Hello, David. Sash weight cannot be accurately determined from sash size, unfortunately. Your only option is to weigh the sash on a scale. Anything less than that would be guesswork, and you will likely end up with the wrong balances for the job.

Once you have the exact weight of the sash, you would then divide it by how many springs support it. For example, if your sash were 17 pounds and you had only one spring per side, you would divide 17 by 2 for 8.5. That would mean you'd need the 8.5 weight option for the Series 159.
