Inside Handle Taper

A home owner from Rocky River, Ohio says:
I purchased the 40-150 to replace the inside handle on an Emco door. I removed the insert to accommodate a 5/16' spindle and fully loosened the set screw. I have a 1 1/4' length of spindle extending past the door surface. However, the spindle will only feed into the 40-150 handle about 3/4' before stopping due to tightness, which leaves about 1/2' of space to be flush with the door. Wondering if the inside part of the handle tapers downward by design or if I might have gotten a handle with inconsistent interior tolerances and should try exchanging it for another one of the same type.

Do you happen to have the original handle still available? If so, we'd love to see some photos of it.

I have attached some photos of the door handle.

Thank you! That's a huge help. To be honest, though, I'm not sure why your spindle isn't going in far enough into the 40-150

I have two thoughts. First, try to to loosen the set screw on the outside handle and see if you can push the spindle deeper into the outside handle. That might work.

The other idea would be to file the end of your spindle just a little. Maybe your spindle is a little thicker than the 5/16" that's usually necessary.
