Is it possible to replace channel balances without removing the window sash.

Quick Learner from Portland, OR
Good Morning,

I was hoping to for some help. I just bought a house and the balances in the windows are mostly rusted out. The windows are aluminum single hung, non-tilt. Other than the balances, the windows are in good shape.

I've done this repair in the past, but am running into a slight issue in the new house. I cannot remove the window sash to access the balances. The guides attached to the sash that hold the balances in place stick out just a bit too far (~1/16") to get the sash out of the frame. I'm worried if I pull too hard to remove the sash I will bend the frame.

My question, is there a method to replace the balances without removing the sash?

Thanks for the help.

Hello,

Thanks for writing in! I'm sorry to say you would not be able to replace the balances without removing the sash. You would not have enough clearance to install the replacement balances and forcing them into the window that way could potentially damage the balances or the window frame.

May I see a photo of the situation you are describing? We may be able to provide some recommendations to safely remove the sash so that you can replace the balances.

Pictures include below. In the photo, the sash is pushed as far as it will go to one side, and you can see the piece that sticks out that is getting stuck when trying to remove the sash. As noted before it is really close to fitting out, but just not quite. Also,

Thanks for the photos! This isn't a sash we are familiar with. There are a few details about the window that we do not typically see on a standard installation; for example, the round plastic piece of the frame and the rim around the inside the frame. That said, we'll need to do a little research to determine the best possible way to complete your repairs.

May I please see a top-down shot of the top sash guide, if possible? Also, would you happen to know who the manufacturer is or what the brand of the window might be?

Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.
