Is there a way to hold the door open?

Thanks for your patience during this busy season. The 79-253 is a basic commercial door closer. Based on the feature you're asking for, I suggest taking a look at the drop down door stop like the 79-040. I personally used this type at our offices here and I find it works well.

If you do want a hold open type closer check with a local locksmith, glass shop, or hardware store in your area to see if they can supply. I'm afraid it's not something we carry.
