The glass sliding door (patio door) on a rental property of mine was installed backwards. Therefore, a thief can lift the door off its tracks from the outside.

I would get in touch with a contractor in your area and see if the door was in fact installed backwards. It could be that your door was manufactured with the operating door on the outside track. PeachTree doors, for example, produced a series of door with the sliding door on the out side intentionally. What you could do if you have the head room in the top track is to install a piece of wood trim with some screws above the sliding door. You would not need it the full length of the track. You would just need it above the sliding door.

A simpler solution is to run flat head screws into the header strategically positioned to hit the top of the door. Near the edge works better than centered because most doors are hollow inside. Run the screw higher than you need to and slowly lower it until the door hits it when lifted but it doesn't get in the way of normal sliding. 2 or 3 are usually enough.
