Key tumbler problem

Quick Learner from Mississippi

I just installed the 40-049 but I am having an issue with the key tumbler thumbturn. It seems to have a catch in it which causes it to be difficult to turn back to fully closed.

This is on my mothers door and it is hard for her to open it.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks for your patience during the holiday. I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your 40-049 lockset. My advice is to first check to see if the lock bolt is rubbing up against the face plate on the edge of the door, or maybe to see if it's not lined up properly with the strike plate in the jamb. Key locks like this have a tendency to be fickle, so even a small misalignment can lead to the issue you've described.

I also suggest you try unlocking it with the door opened so you can see if the face plate is interfering with the lock bolt. Lastly, remove the key cylinder from the handle set and try turning the key or thumb lever to see if the issue is with the lock itself.

This process should hopefully allow you to narrow down the list of possible culprits, starting with the door frame to the lock itself.
