Keyway of mortise lack

Question

Do the latch lever and the tail piece from the cylinder lock meet in the middle of the mortise lock? How do I measure how much to cut off the tail piece?

Winter is coming to MN and I need to get this handle set for the patio door finished.

Check out the video below. While the key lock shown here has a housing, the principles of installing the key lock and cutting down the spindle are the same.
