Looking for a potential replacement for a VPI window

A handy person from WA says:

I'm looking for balance springs to replace broken springs in a window made by VPI company. I understand that company is no longer in business. I'm wondering if you might suggest a set of springs that would adapt to that window. The sash is 15.5" ht. and 31" wide. The window frame channel is 1/2" deep and 1 3/4" wide. The coil spring is 1/2" wide. Would the S161 be a potential substitute?

I have pictures but have not been able to get them transferred to this post.

What suggestions do you have for potential replacements. I am able to make some adaptations.

Pictures now added!

I would appreciate help. It looks like one of your balancer units might work.

Thanks, Erich

Hello,

Your balance assembly actually looks like a match to the 15-087 housing pivot, which uses the 15/32" wide S180 coil springs and the other related items found on our product pages. Take a look and see how the specifications compare to yours. Thanks for posting!

A quick learner says:
Hi Casey,
I have a couple of questions about the replacement for the VPI window. Does the 15-087 have its own coil or does it need one installed. If so, does the housing come apart for installation? Since I don't have a number referencing the coil weight would the weight of the window divided by two equal to the coil number? For a double coil is a tandem unit needed?
Thanks!
Erich

Casey from SWISCO responded:

Yes, the 15-087 comes apart to install the first S180 coil. See the diagram below that shows how this assembly installs, as well as how a second coil would be mounted on top of the pivot using the 15-086 housing.

You are also correct that if your original coils do not have numbers stamped on the base, you would weigh your window sash and divide the weight by the number of coils used to support it to choose the correct strength options.
