Hi. I have MW (Dual, I believe) windows from 1991. One of my sash balances broke, possibly the cord. I can't figure out how to remove the sash and the vinal tracks that house the balance hardware. Can you provide some guidance as I don't want to break the tracks These windows are not tilt windows so my first roadblock is simply removing the sashes from the jamb. The balance is in the jambliner, so my first question is how to access the hardware. I've attached photos of the sash and jambliner, if they help at all.

I believe your vinyl jamb liners are held in by pressure by the sashes and springs behind the vinyl tracks. Try this: grab the inside sash and push to one side and swing out the opposite side. Then repeat with the top sash. Now the jamb liners should come out for you to inspect to see what you need. Let us know if this has helped you at all.

Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for the response. I was hopeful but the tracks showed no sign of movement when pushing laterally on the sashes. I don't think there is any spring tension holding the sashes in. Any other suggestions?

I may have one more suggestion for you, Mitch. Remove the interior trim and slide out the jamb liners with the sashes intact. Now take one jamb liner and sash to your nearest millwork and have them set you up with a new set of jamb liners. Hopefully this will work for you.
