This is a smallish approximately 1 inch in length  part that the lock would latch into made of plastic

Thanks for posting. I can't quite make out the shape of the 'latch' that broke off, but see our 85-011 or maybe the 85-014 to start. Compare these with the old keeper and see if you think either could work as a substitute.
