Multi-Point Strike Plate

Hi,

Today I received my 82-238 Double Hook Mortise Lock and 82-240 Multi-Point Mortise Latch Lever. I've installed them but now I can't get the 82-238 to release. It seems like the tab between the hooks needs to come in contact with the striker plate for the mechanism to work properly. I've enclosed a picture of my current striker plate and I'm wondering if I can modify it somehow or do I need the 89-030 Multi-Point Striker Plate.

I'm not sure what the problem could be. Can you go into more detail on why the 82-238 won't release? Do you mean that when you flip the thumb lever, the hooks won't retract? Or do you mean that the hooks aren't engaging with the keeper to begin with?

I mean that the lever won't release unless the little tab in the picture between the hooks is engaged with the strike plate or if I push it in with my thumb. We added some felt pads on the striker plate and this engages the tab enough to partially release the lever or at least partially lock the door, but not fully.

Ahh, I see. Thank you for clarifying. That's actually a feature. That button assures that the door must be shut before the hooks engage. Otherwise, if the hooks are extended and you accidentally close the door, it will hit the keeper and potentially damage your door.

That shouldn't prevent the door from operating, though. It just means you can't lock the door unless it's fully closed, which is how a door would ideally be operated to begin with.

So my question remains: When I close the door the hooks don't fully engage, just partially. This is after applying a few felt pads to build up the striker plate so that the button would be depressed. Otherwise without the added felt pads the button won't be depressed at all, preventing the lever from being released. Since my current solution is jury-rigged, do I need a new striker plate so the button will be depressed and the hooks fully engaged?

I'm not sure about the thickness of your keeper; that is to say, how far it sticks out from the frame. Compare it to the thickness of the 89-030, which is 1/2". Does that come out as far as yours?

Another thought could be your jamb has a little "bow" in it. This could have happened when the frame was installed and they made the screws to tight with out shimming behind the frame. Instead of felt pads, try using a few washers to build up the keeper. This could be the easiest fix with out reinstalling the side frame.
