Need Replacement parts

Quick Learner from Massachusetts

Hello, The coil in my window snapped and I need to find replacement parts. The serial number on the coil mechanism is CertainTeed H65 32/3M. There appears to be two coils on each side of the window. If there is anything you can do to help me find the correct replacement parts I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thank You, Elizabeth

Hello, Elizabeth. I think we can help, as we do sell a number of Certainteed brand parts. However before I recommend a balance I would like to see a clear picture of the pivot shoe, if that's at all possible. When it comes to coil balances, the springs and covers for one window look more or less the same as the hardware for another window. The pivot shoe is usually the most visually distinct component, so that's what we usually use to narrow down the list of possibilities.

You'll also need the stamps printed on the old spring. It should be a three digit code found near the screw that connects it to the pivot shoe. If you don't see such a code, you will instead need to get the precise weight of the sash so that we can properly calculate how strong these ought to be.

Hello Tom, thanks for your response! I cannot find a stamp on the metal coil. When the coil snapped most of it remained in the window. However, if its possible to get the window's weight based on its size, the window measurements are 63Hx40W. I plan to have the repair men in my apartment building replace the coil once I find the right part. There are 10 other people in my building who also need this part but our repair man cannot find it so thats why I am looking. I'm not sure what the pivot shoe is but I tool more photos of the window mechanisms. This is only the coil from the right side of the window, I didnt remove the left coil yet. I appreciate your help!

I'm afraid it's not possible to get the weight based on size. If there are no stamps visible on the springs, you're going to have to remove the sash from the window and place it on a scale, then divide that weight by how many springs support it. In your case, 4.

So for example if your sash ends up weighing 20 pounds, you want to use four 5 pound springs (two on each side). Hopefully that makes sense.

I'm still not 100% sure what your configuration is, though, as I can't see the pivot shoe. This is the plastic "block" that the springs screw to, and what in turn connects to the bottom corners of the sash. I can just about make it out in your first photo but it's hard to tell.

If you have what I think you have, that would be our 15-192 pivot shoe. That means you can use our Series 170 and Series 171 coil springs (the former stacks on the bottom, the latter stacks on top), as well as the 15-156 cover and 15-157 balance drum (you need one of each for each spring).

We have a video that shows you how these parts interact. Given that this is a Certainteed brand window, and based on what I can make out, I feel confident that this configuration is a winner. You should triple check before you buy anything just to be safe, though. Can't hurt to be sure.
