It definitely sounds like the mortise is shot, yes. One easy way to confirm is to remove the handle set from the door and attempt to throw the mortise manually, like with a screwdriver or something similar. Anything that's flat and can fit in the slot. If the problem persists, then the mortise is broken. My recommendation for replacement would be the 82-218. |
