Old Window Spiral Balance

A home owner from 06067 says:
We have a summer cottage and one of the windows is very difficult to open and close - seems like there is too much tension on the spiral balance. I have no idea what kind these are and would appreciate ant help in identifying them so I can try and adjust the tension to see if that solves our problem.

A replacement is another option, but I would need to complete measurements, it looks to be 1/2 inch diameter and about 20.5 inch tube/spiral.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
John

It definitely sounds like you need a new balance. They're probably rusted from age, which would account for why they're hard to operate. The issue is, you have very, very old balances that aren't made anymore.

The good news is that I believe you can use our S500-21 as a replacement, along with a bracket like our 17-012. Look these parts over and let me know if you agree. You'll also find a charging tool like our 75-005 to be very helpful.
