Is the arm closest to the crank for item number 39-187, 1 inch shorter than the one on item number 39-089? Thank you.

Are you referring to the gear arm? The difference isn't so much the size as the shape, and therefore angle of the link arm. The 39-089 has a somewhat "Z" shape while the 39-187 has a somewhat "M" shape.
