Owens Corning windows

Quick Learner from united states

Does anyone know how these come apart to replace pivot shoes or spiral balances?

Windows were installed about 1996 and are still in good shape, except for the pivot shoes. The frames are very rigid fiberglass, not vinyl so jamb spreaders will not work.

Thanks if you can help,

Bill

Sure, we actually have a couple videos on how to replace this kind of shoe. I'll link them below for your convenience.

Once you have a shoe out, I'd like you to tell me its thickness. That dimension alone should be enough for me to identify a good replacement.

the thickness of the old pivot shoes is 5/8"
I have previously ordered pivot shoes 15-047 from Swisco in 2017, but have not been able to figure out how the windows come apart. 15-047 seems to be the correct part.

Your videos are not appropriate for this type of window, the framing is much too rigid for the spread method and the balance and sash covers cannot be pried off with a screwdriver, as in first video.

In the second photo I previously sent you, a dirty-looking flat white cap is visible. When pried off, there are philips head screws under each of these. Perhaps if unscrewed, the assembly could be pulled out and reveal the pivot shoes?

I'm honestly not sure. I've never come across a tilt window where at least one of the two prior methods didn't work. If your window is special in some way, then I'm afraid it would fall outside our ability to advise you.  You'd have to contact the original manufacturer of the window to see what special method is required.

Hi Bill,

I have the same type of Owens Corning windows in my house. Did you figure out how to remove the pivot shoe? If so, do you mind sharing?

Thanks.
Kelly.
