Part of an older window fell out

Home Owner from Atlanta
I bought a condo constructed around 2002. Windows don't slide well and this spring part fell out. I'll need to identify it and instructions on how to replace. The label with warranty (ha) was visible and is shown in one of the photos

Thanks for writing in! There is a chance that we can supply you with a replacement channel balance for you window. However, to determine the correct replacement balances needed for your window, I'll need to see a photo of an undamaged balance removed from the window. The spring is only part of the entire balance system.

To properly identify them, I'll need to see a photo of any attachments that may be on the top or bottom of the balance.

If this is a tilt window, I'll need to see any attachments that could possibly be left behind in the window or that could possibly be attached to the bottom of the window. If there is a hook at the top of the balance, I'll need to see the space in the window channel where the hook connects.

I will also need to know the stamp from the metal channel of the balance. This is what helps to determine the weight range your balances should be able to carry to support the weight of your sash.

If there are no balances in the window at all, I'll need to see an undamaged balance from a similar window and I'll need to know the height of the visible glass as well as the window weight.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

I have a couple of questions:
1) how do I remove an undamaged balance?
2) What do you mean "I will also need to know the stamp from the metal channel of the balance."

Is this something I can only see once I remove it or would it be stamped on the tracks somewhere?

The channel balances are typically installed on the left and right side of the movable sash in the window. The sash is the part of the window you push up and down to open and close it.

We'll first need to start with identifying the type of window you have before we can determine the steps you'll need to take to remove your balances. The two types of windows are typically tilt window (which tilt in towards you so that you can clean the outside of them) or non-tilt windows (which do not tilt in at all).

(Take a look at our blog that details what each of our balances are and how we identify them, here.)

In regard to the stamp, you are correct. You will only be able to identify it once you've removed the balance from the window.

Once we have an idea of the type of balance you have in the window, we will be able to give better guidance on how to remove them.

If you are unsure of the type of window and/or balance you have, please send a photo of it installed in the window. This may help to determine the best way to remove them so that they can be properly identified.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the photos. It appears you have a non-tilt window balance, which are fairly easy to remove. Although, we do recommend exercising caution given the amount of force these balances hold.

Take a look at the video below for an idea on how to remove these balances.
