Hi there- thanks for reaching out to us!
We'll need to see some photos of the balances removed from the window to be able to determine the best replacement option for your project Jason. Once we can see them we can get the ball rolling on finding you the best option!
Thanks Jason
Thanks for getting back to us, Jason. I was afraid you might have had this. This is an old discontinued Pella box balance. Pella offers no replacement for these and haven't for years. I recommend contacting a local mom and pop type store who deals in Pella hardware to see if they have older stock lying around. I'm sorry we cannot be of more help.
Ok thanks tried the mom and pop store route and ended up here. Not opposed to a non standard replacement as long as the strings are sprung with enough tension and are long enough. Doesn't have to even be Pella brand or style will retro fit anything that might work
Thanks
Jason
Unfortunately, as Paul said, no replacement is offered for this part; not even a retrofit. A new window is likely your only option.
Whats the longest cord offered on an Anderson balance?
If 6 is the pound and 47 is the cord length as marked on my Pella balance box shouldn't we be able to match a pound and length? Making it fit is of no concern I have a van full of tools to make that happen.
Thanks
Jason
I'm afraid not, Jason. We've tried just about everything and we have not gotten an Andersen balance to work as replacement for these Pella boxes.
Paul,
Thank you for your time, If I may ask one more question why won't another brand box work? Tension? the length of cord or is it something else?
I'm not trying to be a pain just wondering out loud, want to exhaust all possibilities before I move on. The logical part of my brain tells me something in your catalog should work as the concepts are so similar.
But I also understand this is what you guys do and that I'm not the first to ask these question. If its no then I'll accept that and move on.
Again thank you for your time.
Jason
If you feel you're really able to make some modifications to get this to work, that gives you a few more options than past customers. Let me do my due diligence and research this.
Could you provide the width and height of the complete window and the weight of the relevant sash? Once I have that, I'll dive into my books.
Paul,
Thank you I'll get that info for you today. Modifications to the window and head jamb aren't an issue on our end
Thanks
Jason
Alright, to start... here are some fuller details about the Andersen balance box -- for example, the 24-637. The length of the box is 6-5/16" (with the flange it is 6-7/8"), the width is 3", the thickness is 3/4", and the distance between the cords is 2-1/4". The 24-637 balance box is for a 12 pound sash, and the cord length is 37".
I'd still be interested in seeing the full height and width of your window (plus sash weight), in order to mull this over a little further.
Window info as follows
31 wide
44 1/2 tall
Sash at 12 lbs
Thanks again,
Jason
Thank you. In that case, I recommend our 24-737 balance box. Just remember that this was made for Andersen windows, not Pella. There is no guarantee that it will work. I'm just sorry we couldn't offer anything better!
Thank you so much, just fitted the 24-737's into the Pella windows, Used fir blocking behind the flange, drilled through the metal head jamb, secured with screws, drilled very carefully through the two holes at the head of the box and secured with 8 penny nails, slip tied the cord to a screw driver and cut off the plastic pin, then fed the cord through the swivel and tied it off. Secured the swivel back onto the sash, both sides of course, slid the sashes back into the jamb liner and presto smooth as silk. The return weight and cord length were perfect.
Anyway thank you so much for your time and helping me see this project through.
Jason
Awesome! I'm glad to hear it worked out. Thanks for posting your process, too, I'm sure this will be a huge help to customers in the future. Please let us know if you ever need anything else, we're always here to help.
Thanks, in advance, for any advice.
Bill
Looking to do this same thing with my Pella windows and am trying to size the Anderson balancers. I thought I was all set to order, but your recommendation to use the 737's has me doubting myself. If the first digit of the Anderson model represents the tension and Jason's sash weighed 12lbs, I would have assumed 637 was correct model since 6x2=12.
I guess my question is did you "size up" your recommendation to compensate for any potential differences between Pella and Anderson windows? Or am I completely misunderstanding how you size one of these?
The digits in this code aren't directly representative of any physical detail regarding the balance's calibration or the weight it supports. It's strictly an abstraction.
To tell you the truth, it's been a long time since we visited the topic of using Andersen balances on a Pella window, but looking at the question in the light of 2023 I'm not sure that I would advise it. We've had other customers try it since this post in 2019 and none have been successful. If you were to ask me today, I would tell you that it's probably not worth trying.
I know that's not the news you want to hear. These old Pella balances are very difficult to source and supply, so I know that you're in a pinch to find anything that would install. But Pella specifically designs their windows so that you can't use other brands; they don't want you going to any company other than them, and they do a lot to ensure exactly that and it's rare to see an exception to the rule.
I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I just don't think this hardware will work for you.
