Pivot Shoes and Bars

Hi:

Can you tell me which pivot shoes and bars I need to order for replacement on my Acan windows (installed 2007)?

I have some 26-241 in my cart right now (along with 30 latches because the old ones all started disintegrating), but I am not sure it is correct, or which shoes I need. Also, can you tell me what tool I need to remove the bars? I have tried hex keys, torx drivers, Philips, etc with no luck.

Hey, Bob. It's tough to tell what you have while the hardware is all still installed. Many important details are obscured by the frame. For example, the 26-241 does look close, but the tip is still in the shoe so I cannot be 100% sure.

Speaking of the shoe, our 15-111 is a possibility. You can start by looking at this and seeing how well our dimensions match yours. You'll definitely want to remove both parts from the window to ensure that the design and dimensions match up, for both the pivot bar and the pivot shoe.

Thanks for your response--Believe it or not, I initially gave up, and had not yet done anything. However, I have had a couple more pivot bars break, so I am now relooking at taking care of it.

The good news is that after watching several videos, I have a better understanding, and it appears as though all of the shoes/coils are still operable--although I would still like to order some to have on hand. Since they are still working, I am hesitant at this point to remove them. I am sending a better picture and I am reasonably sure that the 15-111 is what I need--as the dimensions match the old shoe. My question is, if/when I do need to remove/replace is there any reason why I could not make the cutout at the top of the track, behind the stop, as opposed to just below the bottom sash?

Also, regarding the pivot bars: When installing the new ones. is it better to tap them in from the side or position them from above and tap down? (When removing them, they fell apart when tapping from the side...)

Thank you! I agree, I think the 15-111 shoe looks like a great match. I can also tell you that my earlier suggestion of the 26-241 was accurate. The tip style is exactly the same and I'm confident this will work.

As for installing the pivot bars, you shouldn't have to tap anything. They should just slide into the cavity from the side. If it's a tight fit then you could try giving them a little tap, just as long as it's not too much.

I will go ahead and place my order. Is there anything I can do proactively to prevent the breakage of these pivot bars--such as lubricating the track the shoe rides in? I see you sell a product for sliding doors 75-077, but I am concerned that if the shoe slide too easily that the sash would not want to stay open--putting more pressure on the coil springs?

Lubricating the track always helps. I recommend using silicone spray, which you can get at any local hardware store. It works very well and, best of all, doesn't attract any dust or debris.

Other than that, just make sure that when you tilt these windows in to clean that you raise them up a few inches first. That's the most common cause of pivot bar damage in my experience, other than just old age.
