Pivot bars and shoes

Handy Person from San Francisco
So pivot bars have broken:

1) replacement pivot bars, as above, 2 screw holes, stamped "16"

2) replacement shoes? Can I just get the little round metal part? - One broken one and one intact one shown for reference

3) advice for how to get the broken half of the pivot bars out of the sash? you can see the broken half still in there. There seems to be a slit inwards of the screwholes ? perhaps that's specifically to push the broken pivot bar out the side? You can see a bit of the bar through the slit. If so is there a special tool for that? Or do I have to cut the vinyl and shove it along?

4) For shoe installation do I need those special pry-open tools?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL YOUR EXPERT HELP!

Hello! Thanks for your patience during this busy season. We can definitely help with these parts.

Starting with the pivot shoe, I recommend the 15-175. I also recommend the 26-226 pivot bar, though you should check to ensure the hole positions are the same. That's an important detail. If they differ, let me know how.

Regarding the broken piece of the old pivot bar still in the window, you're definitely not getting that out of there. What I always do is just kinda push it deeper into the window frame with the new pivot bar. The channel where it inserts is hollow from one end to the other, so you have plenty of room. Outta sight, outta mind.

Finally, for removing the pivot shoe, you don't necessarily need jamb spreaders. I actually find them to be a pretty big investment if you're only replacing one or two shoes. More often than not I just make my own cutout. It takes a little more work but it's a LOT cheaper. The video below will show you how we do it.

Hey Tom, thanks so much for the response! I'm super happy because I was pressed for time so I took the plunge and ordered from you guys last week on eyeballing faith (should arrive today) and I ordered exactly what you said! 15-175 and 26-226!

Also that's great to know about the broken piece... I actually cut into the vinyl so I could shove it out with a screwdriver, because I needed to assemble the broken pieces to make sure I had the right replacement (hole positions)... 15-175.

Finally, it looks like there is ALREADY a cutout int the jamb, so I'm hoping I can just slide the shoe up and out. But my guess is I can't remove the pivot shoe without also removing the coils above the shoe right? There are 3 coils.

Just want to say what a GREAT COMPANY you guys are helping us all with fixes. Really impressed and will spread the word. Stay safe!

You're very kind to say so, thank you! It sounds like you got it all worked out. The one thing I'll add is that you will, indeed, need to remove the full coil balance assembly to get the shoe out. The coils would otherwise be in the way. We have another video that you may find helpful on that front. I can tell you from personal experience that removing a coil balance system can be a little tricky, so I hope  it helps.

Thanks Tom, I'm working on getting the coil balance out. The cutout in my vinyl was already there but it's way at the top, so I nudged everything way up to the top and am now going to try and get it out. Woudld it be smarter to just make a new cutout in the middle where you indicate in your video ? which also has the greatest soundtrack one could ever ask for? Also I imagine a dremel could make the cut too?

You definitely don't want to make the cutout in the middle of the track. That would mean that your coil balance risks falling out of that cutout while you operate your window on a day-to-day basis. The reason they put it all the way at the top is so that it is impossible for the balance assembly to fall out accidentally. I hope that makes sense.

It's funny you mention the song, by the way. We all love that track here. I didn't know elevator music could sound as good as that, but here we are.
